I think it’s fair to say that I’ve come quite late to 2. 4. There are several reasons for this, I’m not an early adopter, I like to see trends and wait for technology to settle down, I’m happy with 35mHz, but mostly it’s because JR didn’t have anything convincing. I did order a JR DSX12, but the supplier was out of stock, and in the interim there were rumours that the Spekrum way of doing 2.

Ian Jones reviewed Hitec's Eclipse 7 Pro radio in RCM&E's November issue and mentioned the lack of firmware updates available. Guess what? Yep, they're now available and Ian has produced a guide as to how users can go about upgrading their software. Amongst others, the upgrade provides improved latency and allows users to save model data to a PC and bring data from a PC too. When I came into R/C aircraft, just like lots of others I joined a club, and was offered lots of good advice, but, due to lack of understanding I’ve made some costly 'newby' mistakes. "Get yourself a transmitter with a least six channels, this will see you through for years to come” was the advice. So off I went to the model shop coming out with a Hitec Aurora 9 after being impressed with all the bells and whistles. This was mistake number one.

If you're on the lookout for thin servos, perhaps for that pylon racer wing then you'll be pleased to know that Hitec’s new 20g HS7115TH dual bearing digital wing servo measures an incredible 8mm deep (26 x 8 x 38mm). Not bad eh? It operates within a voltage range of 6-7. 4v making it compatible when two-cell Lithium Rx batteries are connected too. Add some titanium gears and a torque rating of 3.

Now available in the UK, Futaba's new T8J uses the S-FHSS operating system and joins the T6J launched last year. Similarly styled and once again employing a built-in aerial, the 8-channel radio uses a jog-dial for programming much like the popular 8FG. Spektrum have just unveiled a new model in the form of a range-topping DX18 aero transmitter. The telemetry equipped, 18-channel unit boasts dual aeriels and abck-lit screen along with all the usual high-end features you'd expect. The spec list is below and there's more at Horizon's UK website. A release date and pricing areawaited.

Hitec's new Optic 5 radio is clearly an entry-level set designed to compete with units such as Spektrum's DX5e. It's 2. 4GHz, 1024 bit resolution and similarly priced although the Optic comes with a Minima 6-channel receiver unlike the DX5e that's packaged with an AR500 5-channel job. While both can cope with elevon requirements, the Optic 5 seems to be slightly better featured as while the 5DXe provides fixed dual rates, the Optic nudges ahead with adjustable travel for elevator and aileron with the addition of a V-tail facility, which should please glider pilots seeking a simple second radio.

This MacGregor unit is a pulse proportional set which came to be known as Galloping Ghost - the rudder and elevator flapped! By the mid-1960s, reliable radio gear giving controls comparable to that of ‘full-size’ planes had arrived and was in general use. This was the period of enormous progress when within a few years the mythical ‘average modeller’ went from lumbering free-flight orientated designs, with a crash due to either pilot error or radio failure every few flights, to sleek fast types capable of the full range of aerobatic manoeuvres which were flown week-in-week-out with very few malfunctions. In these circumstances pilot skill also made rapid progress until the top men reached a standard little different to standards prevailing today. This refers to the then predominating aerobatic field, you understand.

Republished here, in 1987 Peter Russell wrote a number of articles for RCM&Ecovering the history of radio control developments. There can be few who enjoy the present state of R/C, with radio gear that is sophisticated, reliable and cheap, easily built models with good performance, a large range of supporting fittings and gadgets, who have much idea of how this Utopian state of affairs came about. To cover the history of R/C fully would be far too long and tedious for an article such as this, for there were a number of periods when no apparent progress was being made. But an attempt to pick out the more interesting ‘high spots’ might reveal some ‘little-known-facts’ about our favourite hobby.

Good news everyone, it looks like the XG7’s big brother is set to arrive in the UK sooner than expected, indeed, as this issue goes to press. The XG8, a Li-Fe battery powered, 8-channel radio has 30 model memories and an SD card slot for expanded storage and data sharing. It’ll use JR’s DMSS 2. 4GHz system that provides receiver battery voltage telemetry as standard and the ability to reflect real-time data from other add-on sensors too.

In response to feedback from DMSX transmitter owners, Horizon Hobby have discovered that in some “rare instances”, DSMX equipped transmitters with certain product ID (PID) codes may have a backwards compatibility issue that could cause a ‘hold’ when used with the following superseded DSM2 receivers: AR500, AR6100, AR6100E, AR6110, AR6110E, AR6200 and AR6300. The issue doesn’t affect 'DSM2 only' transmitters and those affected must return their transmitter to Horizon Hobby UK for a free firmware upgrade. Receiving more than a makeover, Spektrum have revised their mid-range stalwart the DX7 in the process grafting a DX8’s body along with a substantial software upgrade, also based on the DX8 AirWare platform. The new DX7S will employ the DSMX frequency of course along with full telemetry feedback such as signal strength, Rx battery voltage, frame losses, and (via sensors) rpm, temperature etc. It’ll have 20 model memories and an SD card slot to facilitate plenty more along with model data transfers and firmware upgrades. Handily the transmitter can operate using a Li-Po battery and the multi-chemistry charger supplied will replenish all cell types.
